Water Security Expert

The African Development Bank, established in 1964, is a premier pan-African development institution. It promotes economic growth and social progress across the continent, with 81 member states, including 54 in Africa.

The Bank's development agenda delivers financial and technical support for transformative projects that significantly reduce poverty through inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Five major areas have been identified for scaling up: energy, agro-business, industrialisation, integration, and improving the quality of life for Africans.

The Agriculture, Human and Social Development Complex (AHVP) leads in implementing two of the five priority areas, namely 'Feed Africa' and 'Improve the Quality of Life for Africans'. The complex comprises five departments, including the Water Development and Sanitation Department (AHWS).

The AHWS is responsible for coordinating the Bank's water development and sanitation-related activities to enhance synergies and contribute to achieving all High5s. The Department leads the scaling-up of the Bank's contribution to Africa's efforts to attain water security and sanitation for sustainable socio-economic transformation.

The African Water Facility (AWF) is an initiative of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) to mobilize resources to finance water sector facilitation and investment activities in Africa. The AWF has been established within the context of the Africa Water Vision and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The African Development Bank manages the AWF on the request of AMCOW.

The AWF plans, organizes, and carries out activities related to project and program cycles, undertakes studies on water sector development issues, provides advice and technical assistance to African countries, and ensures coordination and synergy with other partners and donors in the water and sanitation sector in Africa.

The AWF currently manages a €200 million project portfolio shared across all African countries. The AWF is recruiting a Principal Water and Sanitation Engineer who will be a member of the AWF multidisciplinary team.

The Principal Water and Sanitation Engineer will undertake various activities, including:

• Strategy and Planning

The Water and Sanitation Engineer will provide support to ensure that development results are delivered, operations are effectively managed, and institutional activities are efficiently undertaken in accordance with AWF strategic plans.

• Project Operations

The Water and Sanitation Engineer will manage a portfolio of projects and ensure that the objectives of the projects are met in an efficient and sustainable manner.

• Knowledge

The Water and Sanitation Engineer will support implementation of project-related knowledge activities, including monitoring progress of water and sanitation projects, reviewing results achieved, undertaking analytical work, and generating knowledge documents as appropriate.

To be successful, candidates must have at least a Master's degree or its equivalent in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, or a related discipline. They should also have a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience related to project management, sanitation policy and strategy development, preparation and management of non-sewered sanitation and reuse projects preferably in urban and peri-urban settings.
