As the Area Managing Director, you will be responsible for leading the overall strategic, commercial and operational activities of the business across the WAF Area, that comprises of 24 countries in West and Central Africa. With 50+ legal entities under the belt that WAF Area MD has responsibility for Ocean volume growth as well as full logistics P&L responsibility. The role is responsible for managing the business to achieve its short and long-term financial, safety, sales, and product delivery/development objectives, as set by the overall corporate business strategy and the approved Area Business Plan. Providing guidance and direction through the Area leadership team, the Managing Director will ensure sustainable growth, operational resilience, risk management and compliance, and set the direction for the area-translated business strategy and goals into clear, specific, and achievable objectives, making the strategy tangible for individual teams.

Key Responsibilities

Responsible for Area P&L

  • Building on corporate strategic priorities, develop and monitor Area P&L target (to be signed by Regional Managing Director).
  • Manage performance and ensure targets are met across functions.
  • Enforcing Local Ocean and Logistics targets and support global Key Client performance in the Area.
  • Growth targets on both top and bottom line – deliver EBIT numbers, deliver on cost saving initiatives
  • Efficiency drive – increase Area productivity

Drive Area strategy and Local product development

  • Building on corporate strategic priorities, define Area vision & strategy, business planning & budgeting.
  • Ensure Local product development address local needs and corporate strategy.
  • Execute on Global/Regional solution and product strategies in the Area.
  • Oversee a strategic landside investment program within the Area

Ensure governance guidelines are met in Area

  • Approve policies and procedures that contribute to the overall corporate business plan, e.g. ensure that Global strategy/pricing guidelines are followed, and Global product specs/requirements are met locally.
  • Coordinate with legal requirements on local governance

Establish team to be Local integrator of container logistics

  • Establish team with strong logistics knowledge and capabilities for target verticals and local market customization needs – internal resource development and appropriate external resource recruitment
  • Capture and share knowledge / best practices across organization – learning organization.

The Managing Director will also act as general representative for the unit towards external parties, government, NGO's etc.

  • Direct/ indirect employees around 1000 FTE (all functions)
  • Area strategy, planning and budgeting
  • HSSE performance in the Area
  • Development of Local Service products
  • Local business development
  • Staffing of Local team

Consulted about:

  • Product development agenda for Regional products.
  • Local customization of physical Supply Chain Services products with Regional team.
  • Development of customer opportunities in other Areas / countries within/outside Region.

Key Metrics

Shared:

  • Customer satisfaction (e.g. NPS).
  • Customer profitability of E2E solution offering (customer EBIT).
  • Area share of L&S/non-ocean (%).
  • Area ocean contribution yield.

Individual:

  • Ocean and Logistic Area growth and profitability (e.g. Revenue, GP and EBIT).
  • Area Product development (ROIC).
  • SG&A effectiveness (SG&A growth indexed to sales growth).
  • Engagement score.

Key Interdependencies

Internal stakeholders:

  • Cross-collaboration within products and Areas in Region.
  • Interdependent with other Area Managing Directors in Region.
  • Regional product teams.
  • KAM to ensure development efforts are suited to Global / Regional / Local customer needs.

External stakeholders:

  • Local authorities
  • Potential Local customer executives

  • Comfortable with approximately 25% international travel per annum.
